The other night, while cooking dinner, Eric and I were telling each other about our days, as we often do.
“Well, I started off this morning yelling at the radio because of all those dumbshit House Republicans not voting for the stimulus package,” I said. “I mean, those fucking smug bastards going on about how bad ‘spending’ is, like investing in health care and infrastructure is indicative of some sort of moral looseness, what’s their solution instead? Fucking TAX CUTS? AGAIN?!? Eight years of disaster and these sons of bitches still think that what we really need to fix everything is TAX CUTS? And they get up on their high horses like they have some level of moral authority that hasn’t been completely fucking discredited? Did they even NOTICE that they lost the election? It just makes me LIVID!!!”
“You really should stop being so emotionally invested in the news,” Eric suggested. “You should try to disconnect a little bit.”
Yeah, okay, I get that, I said. But in fact, I wasn’t in such a bad mood as all that, because half an hour before I’d gotten some really good news. Which is that next fall, assuming things go according to plan, I’m going to start a PhD program in American Studies. I got in exactly where I want to go. We’re not planning on moving, so if you know where we live, you can figure out where I’m going.
If I can't stop obsessing about American culture, I may as well try to make a career of it.
But the House Republicans can still bite me, the assholes.

Our gov (dem) had pretty much the same attitude, only instead of "bite me" he said "Every single Republican who voted against the stimulus package should refuse every dollar allotted for his/her district. It's shameful how they can vote against this and benefit anyway."
Congratulations!
wait a sec, you're going to be in Ben's program?
Congrats!!!!!!!
Thanks, all. :)
Yup, Katie, same program!
Hey, congrats on your acceptance! I'm glad it's so close.
Obviously, I feel the same way about the whole "Republican support" thing. It's apparently a gamble they're willing to make: vote "no" for the "I-told-you-so" verdict if it fails. If it works...well, they're already in the shithouse, so there ain't much to lose.
Congratulations Steph....glad you'll be nearby...
Oh the republicans drive me nuts. I mean its impossible to argue with them, cause they keep repeating the same things over and over again. Hardly ever give a good reason.... how can you get anywhere like that....I agree
But congratulations again. So exciting

Congrats!
So glad you are not moving!

PS I find my rants are independent of my moods.
(and I said Congrats already, right?)
Congratulations!
YES! This is excellent news Steph! Congratulations! You've got a wonderful adventure ahead of you. Have fun and be relentless!
Obama's Republican problem is two fold. First, to maximize the effects of the stimulus package, it needs to be passed quickly, which requires Republican support.
Second, and much more important, is that the appearance that Washington is united front is more important to the impact of the stimulus package than the actual money being spent. The psychology that our government is behind the problem will help unfreeze the credit markets (which despite claims to the contrary really are frozen). Therefore it is crucial to have Republican support.
Scott is correct that the Republicans have very little to lose by opposing the bill. In fact, Obama has more to gain by standing up to the Democrats for trying to over-reach than he has by expending political capital countering Republican amendments.
We are in one hell of a mess.
